Greyhound racing used to be a big time event in the US and punters used to love to be there on the tracks to watch their hounds race to the finish line. But things have been changing at the racetracks. The attendance has dropped sharply and fewer people are attending the races causing a major slump over the decade.
Many racetrack owners successfully lobbied state governments to be allowed to add casinos and other gambling options. But the conditions are that a cut of the profits from the casino games would have to go to the racetracks to keep them open. What’s ironic is that many racetrack operators are now agreeing with animal rights activists who believe that greyhound racing is inhumane and want to change gambling laws to put an end to it. This seems to be a desperate attempt by operators to somehow get out of the requirement that they run races in order to continue offering gambling operations which are far more lucrative.
In Iowa Florida and Arizona many greyhound racetrack operators have managed to convince governments to either cut the number of races run each year or eliminate racing entirely so that they can transition out of what seems to be a dying sport. Greyhound racing has been in the US for over a century, but people often prefer horse racing.
With the way things are going, it looks like greyhound racing may disappear from the US pretty soon.
