The grapevine in Nevada says that the Nevada Gaming Control Board is contemplating to impose rules on land-based casino operators, like gamble Las Vegas casinos, with their relationship to online gambling. Gaming Wire has mentioned that board members want to set up policies for licensees who were earlier not restricted in their overseas online gaming ventures. While some licensees played carefully by the rules, others did not, said Randall Sayre of the Gaming Board, which was largely due to the absence of a proper policy underlying rules and regulations.
Some of the issues that could be considered while formulating the rules could be, the use of .net sites to mirror.com sites, with free game play at the former with the objective to lure players to gambling to the latter. Advertising itself was a huge concern for the regulators, as the rules that were permissible for land-based casinos were not automatically relevant to Internet gambling.
However, members of the gaming industry were ambiguous about the possibility of tighter controls on Internet gaming associations. A spokesperson for Harrah’s, which is a leading online gambling operator, mentioned that unless actual procedures and policies were put in place, any comment would be speculative and presumptuous.
Frank Shreck, a legal representative who represented casino operators quite often, mentioned that defining the lines might actually be helpful to the gaming industry. He also said, that at the moment there was so much of ambiguity in the industry, and there was a pressing need for some regulatory guidelines to be put in place. Frank also mentioned that what was permissible and what was not, had to be written in black and white so to say, to make it clear to those concerned.
