Due to the recession, legislatures are thinking about all sorts of new things, and online sports gambling could be on its way back to the United States. Many Washington observers have been indicating that something new is to come with the approach of regulated Internet gambling, and sports wagering wasn’t considered, until recently, likely to be a part of the package.
In Delaware, there is movement to exploit an exemption in the national law against sports betting and this has definitely stirred other states who are very eager to create new revenues too. New Jersey lawmakers, who are eager to find a way to stop the drop in Atlantic City income, want to have the freedom to decide their own sports gambling rules. Delaware is one of the four states (Delaware, Montana, Oregon, and Nevada), that was allowed by a 1992 Congressional law against sports betting, to consider its own statutes for wagering on sports events.
The Sate of New Jersey is also looking into instituting intrastate online gambling with the United States Government. While there is opposition to legalizing sports gambling, states might force Congressional representatives to change due to economic necessity. Procedures to regulate online gambling will definitely be met with calls to include sports gambling.
Even though there is no federal law against online gambling, it has been found by courts that the Wire Act does preclude sports betting on the Internet. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act does block all but those four states from having any form of sports wagering. However, there is a strong movement in America for removing outdated laws, and online sports gambling would serve as a strong regulatory form in which to collect revenue from.
So the United States may soon see gambling openness only dreamt of a few months ago.
