The internet gambling laws in the USA are quite outdated and Representative Barney Frank is trying to convince fellow lawmakers about making some changes. Recently 4 other lawmakers, who are all Democrats, said that they would support the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act. This makes it a total of 23 co-sponsors.
The State of California might legalize online gambling first, before Mr. Frank gets his chance. Californian State lawmakers are currently discussing ways to make online poker legal again. Many Californians would support this change as poker is very popular in America.
Barney Frank did try to get the law changed previously, but he didn’t succeed because Congress had a majority of Republicans then, but now things have changed. He might get his chance in overturning the UIGEA - Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was introduced in 2006. Democrats have taken power so it might help Barney Frank with his cause, but there is no guarantee.
So if he succeeds, what would this mean for online casino gambling in the USA. Well, it would change everything… America has the biggest gambling market in the world and when the UIGEA was put in place, the online casino industry lost 70% of its market. Very few casinos still operate in America, like Rushmore casino from the RTG software group. Other casino software operators like Microgaming pulled out of America for fear of being prosecuted.
Overall, I think Barney Frank will succeed in his appeal to get the gambling laws changed. The USA needs cash and lots of it due to economic reasons and there is no better source of income than from a casino, especially online casinos. For a country that brags about freedom… what happened to the freedom of choosing to spend a few bucks on a craps table that happens to be online and not in an actual room?
